Leading design growth across established cycling app

The Challenge

Help cyclists get quick, bike-friendly directions from point A to B without leaving the app

We have a mapping app that does navigation. There are many times when a user needs directions to a location and shouldn’t need to open Google Maps to find the best route across town or to add a detour from a route they are navigating.

Designing an MVP for scalability and tracking outcomes

Lead Product Designer

May 2023 - December 2023

This project kicked off between myself and the CEO/Founder. I later partnered with a new product manager to execute on the implementation of the feature. In the discovery phase I defined user stories to identify the core needs and user workflows. I explored wireframes and design solutions and led cross-functional design critiques to refine the ideas. I collaborated with a team of 5 iOS and Android engineers and 2 QA specialists to build & test the first releases.

Understanding the problem

Using storyboards to define user needs, I uncovered when and where this feature would be the most helpful.

Scenario based design critique

Seeking feedback across the organization to refine concepts

Outcomes

13%

user engagement on the recording screen within the first 30 days

71%

reduction in deleted trips due to pre-recording screen

Innovative Wins

In App Feedback

I championed a lightweight in-app feedback mechanism to allow us to collect user insights and schedule future user testing with them. This resulted in 114 feedback responses and 84% positive results.

Try Before You Buy

We crafted a multi-tier approach to allowing free users the ability to interact with a paid feature in the hopes to prove value and increase conversion. The first stage trial was a limited time trial for all users. The second stage trial is 5 uses of the feature as a free user before having to upgrade.
